My husband's story: Solar Energy

Hello - this is Scott, again: We installed solar energy on our home a few months back - and we have had several requests to find out more about the impact on our overall energy usage (and our associated electric bills), so...

Now that we finally have seen a couple months of our electric bills - we can report: It is going GREAT!!!

THE PREP: Before we ever considered solar, we followed the 5 R's. We "refused" unnecessary usage by donating most small appliances (coffee maker, food processor, vacuum cleaner, microwave) and turning off electronics when not in use. We also tried to "reduce" our existing energy usage as much as possible by installing dimmers, painting our interior a light color, and taking basic steps around insulating (attic and basement insulation and weather proofing our windows/doors), and turning the thermostats down (in my office and the house).

OUR BASELINE: Our total electric energy usage for the previous 12 month period was 5431 kWh - mainly associated with lighting, home electronics, the blower on our gas insert fireplace, and the electric heating in my basement office (I wear a puff jacket on all but the warmest days). We use natural gas for our cooking, tank-less water heater, and our primary heating (our gas insert).

THE DECISION TO GO SOLAR: I like to do things by the numbers (hey, Bea is the "artsy" creative one, but I am an engineer by training, so I like numbers...). So there was no way that I was going to make an investment if it did not make any financial sense, especially working in a start-up these last four years (i.e., less than stable financial situation). Well, the bottom-line is that the numbers did make sense - we are using our savings from the zero waste lifestyle to fund a 20-year solar lease (to provide more than 90% of our anticipated power for the next 20 years) providing us with a return on investment of 13%.  The plan was also based on adding comfort to our lives (e.g., being to be able to work from home without a puff jacket) and making room for the future (one of our goals is to ultimately get an electric car).

THE IMPACT: So what has the impact been?  Well, we did actually turn up the heat - so I don't have to wear the puff all the time. But despite the relaxation of the "thermostat tyranny", we have seen a huge decrease in our month bills:
  • For our first full month (FEB 13 to MAR 14): We used negative 5 kWh (our meter ran backwards). Of course, in Northern California, we had a sunny, warm February, with virtually no rain. For the same period in 2011, we used 601 kWh.
  • For the 2nd month (MAR 14 to APR 13): We used 141 kWh. Last month was cold and very rainy (i.e., less solar power), we had guests and turned up the electric heaters. For the same period in 2011, we used 567 kWh.
  • Bottomline: Our total electric bill for two months is $17.50, plus $8.88 in unavoidable taxes, etc. For comparison sake, the same two months last year cost us $207.28.
  • Environmental Impact: As of Friday, April 27, Solar City happily informs me that we have generated 1579 kWh of electricity, eliminating 2022 lbs. of CO2 since installation (equivalent to 1.0 mature trees).

    NEXT STEPS:
I have to admit that we have learned a lot about solar energy during this process (e.g., solar installation, financing, net metering, etc.). But it did not stop there...In fact, as part of the deal, we also received an energy efficiency audit…and apparently I did not do such a great job on insulating our home during the "prep" step.  We found out that we were losing 43% of our heat (!) through air leakage, so we are taking further steps to better insulate our house, by adding insulation in the attic, and sealing the drafty floor boards from the crawl space below. We are also looking for more energy efficient bulbs to fit our dining room's chandelier. Next winter should show further improvement in energy savings!

I am sure that Bea has other plans in store as well...maybe we will "simplify" our kitchen by eliminating our gas-powered stove and replace it with a simple electric-powered hotplate ;)

    Do you remember...

When you were in school and you had to vote on different things...

Well, we did that tonight and it was so cute...

I had to stall the voting in order to get my camera!

We had three movies to choose from...
    Tom and Jerry
    Madeline
    Signing Times

They were supposed to cover their eyes and raise their hand for the movie of their choice!

There was a whole lotta cheatin going on!

But even more than that, there was a whole lotta cuteness going on!

When the voting was over with we had to remind Abby that she forgot to vote!

    She was a swing vote!

Tom and Jerry won for tonight!

    Our Weekend!

The little children had their first karate tournament on Saturday!
They had so much fun and came home with a lot of hardware!
They see Johnny getting trophies and medals so they were thrilled to finally get their own!

Johnny went to prom this weekend!
There he is with his date...
    I mean dates!
Yes, both boys(Will and Johnny) took Gabby to the prom!

The both got her a corsage but...
I sent the second team(hubby) to the pictures and well, the pics weren't quite what they should have been. (That's just between us!)
Johnny said "Dad spent most of the time talking AND then the camera ran out of batteries..."

I guess that's what happens when it's the 5th time through...
Our poor Luke- he'll be the 13th ;-)

The kids love to go get donuts/ muffins and coffee with Dad in the morning.
They really wanted to have breakfast outside today!
    Dad said yes...
    I said it's 44 degrees outside honey!
Dad said so they'll eat fast!

They did (eat fast) and loved it!

We went to church with Katie and Andrew this morning it was so nice! The church they are being married in is absolutely beautiful!

Katie helped Sarah do her nails!

They are the sticker kind and look so cute!
    Sarah was thrilled!

This weekend we also had recital practice for Ava and Anna, manners classes and 2 MRI's of the brain.
It was a bit busier than usual and I did think maybe we should not go to church this weekend but we ended up going... and everything fell into place- perfectly!
    Only God!
And yes, my fleeting thought of skipping church was... well, wrong...

This weekend I came across two children that I remembered from a waiting child list. They were such precious children- quite unforgettable. I had just been wondering IF I would ever be able to find out what happened to them?

And then God led me right to them- it was so cool!

I wish there was a data base so we could see where these precious children are and also see their forever families.

    How was your weekend?

    There's a Jungle Out There

You've seen quite a few updates of our front yard, but our backyard has kind of been no-man's-land. The neighbor behind us doesn't seem to care much for taking care of his back yard. If not for the fence between our properties, I can't imagine what kind of state our yard would be in. Here are some photos so you can see that I'm not exaggerating.

Admittedly, the day lillies are on our side of the fence, but I've hated them since the day we bought the house and had every intention of removing them.

There is so much shrubbery, vines, and tree limbs that have encroached onto our property that we just had to take matters into our own hands.

This is one of the many reasons why I love my hubby:

    And from the other side:

Those day lillies are actually on the neighbor's side of the fence, even though it may look otherwise, but some of the leaves are poking through to our side. It makes me wonder where the flowers actually originated from...

There's still a little more work to be done but wow, what a difference. I don't even want to plant anything else back there. You can see that our yard is rather small and all that foliage made it look even smaller. We do have a smallish swing set off to the side, but the kids still do most of their playing in the front yard. We also did a lot of work on our vegetable garden so stay tuned for another update, as well as some dining room changes in the works.

We spent Sunday afternoon at the baseball game. They had a special parade for the area Little League teams before the game started, the kids got to meet the team mascot and high-five the players. Our seats weren't the greatest, but there were big smiles all around!

What were you busy with over the weekend? Did you have a chance to enjoy the great weather?

    G*ggle, G*ggle, Quack

The children LOVE to go to plays at our local Stages Theater!
They are for the 10 and under crowd and all of our children are able to understand them!
We usually read the book before we go to the play so they can understand what is going on.

Giggle, Giggle, Quack was wonderful! They were all laughing at the antics of the farm animals, Farmer Brown and his twin brother Bob!

Before it began a bloggy friend came up to us to say "hello"!

It was so fun to meet Cindy from Minnetrista! She has two treasures from China!

After the play we love to get a pic with the actors!

If you are familiar with the books- Duck is on the lower left and will be once again in the play "Duck for President" next fall! Yay, he was incredible and we can't wait to see him again!

This is the book... if you look at it sideways... sorry!

In a couple weeks we will be going to
"Where the Mountain Meets the Moon"

It is from chinese folklore and we know the little girl that is in it!
I bought the book! We had planned to read it! It was longer that I had expected... and I can't find it ;-)
    I have looked everywhere...

sooooooo, we won't be reading that story...

BUT, we will be enjoying the play!

    Homeschool Conference

Sarah and I went to the homeschool conference in our city. We had so much fun together!

She volunteer for one of the speakers!  I was so glad she was confident enough to do that! She did a great job!

She was able to look at her new books for the next school year!
    It was so exciting!
Seriously- we are already looking forward to next school year!!

The best part of the day was when we met Sarah's teacher from last year!
We felt like we were meeting a celebrity!
    Sarah does Abek* video streaming.
So she has an online teacher.
She has learned so so much!
We are very happy with the program- especially for her!
And especially for our busy family!

She is just finishing *2nd grade in June and will be in 3rd grade in August.

We left with many items and had so much fun together!

    * Sarah came home at 8 yrs 9 months old. She did not know any english and did not like school in China. She was treated as many of the orphans are- hit and belittled in school. She was often hungry and afraid to ask questions. When given the opportunity she would stay home and care for the babies.

She came to us with no confidence in her learning ability and NO desire to learn. She was very good at faking that she knew the answer and cheating to obtain it.

She would sit for hours and pout and power struggle over her school work.

In time she learned to "love learning" and to not be embarrassed when she didn't know the answer. She has learned about Jesus, about his unconditional love and how much fun it is to learn. She is loving homeschool right now and we are so thrilled!

We school year around with breaks for holidays and off a month in the summer- July!

People often ask where do you begin when educating an older adopted child.

For us, it was at the beginning.

You start at Pre-k and go as fast or slow as you need too!
They need the basics, they need the foundation from the early years.

I look forward to bringing more children to the homeschool conference when they are ready!

    Blog Maintenance

You may have noticed over the past couple days I have done some blog organizing. I recently read somewhere (I forgot where it was, but please let me know if you saw the same article) that it is super important for readers to have an easy way to navigate your website. You only have a few seconds to interest a reader and potentially gain a new follower so you've got to make your blog easy. If the first post on your page doesn't interest a particular reader, they should still see a simple way to view other things that you've worked on. Hence, my updated button bar.

You can see two new buttons I created on the menu bar - "Projects" and "Recipes." I hope to also add a "Home Tour" button one of these days, but I feel like my house is so far from representing me and my true style that it would be misleading for someone to judge me based on the current state of my house. Regardless, this is what you'll see when you click on the Projects page.

There's a grid of thumbnails of my most popular past projects and I really hope to keep it updated as I complete new ones. My blog is still in its infant stage so there isn't a whole lot, but I welcome you to scroll through, especially if you are a new reader.

The Recipe page is pretty much the same. Yikes, there's only five - better start cooking!!

Do you have any other ideas for making a blog more user-friendly? What are your thoughts on blog navigation?

    On Her Own!

    Last week Sarah started Cot*llion!
They are basically manners classes-  simple dance combined with etiquette.

This is her first time going anywhere without her Momma and the posse...

    And she loved it!

After class she went to the grocery store with Daddy(and the posse) and saw many of her new friends (they were also shopping for dinner).

Hi Sarah, Hi Sarah, Hi Sarah!
    Hi, Hi, Hi!

When she arrived home she talked a million miles a minute- and told me all about it!
I do love girls and how they share!

All the children bought me flowers from the grocery store!

    They are so thoughtful!

FYI- we did have a bio kiddo that basically flunked out of manners classes...
But I won't post which one it was for fear I would embarrass him...

I am just so happy for her!
    For all she is learning!
For her excitement about life as a 12 yr old!
For her amazing progress in just 3 short years!
For the wonderful young lady she is becoming!

    Thank you Jesus!

    Rejoicing!

We went to the Doctor today for the littlest superman!
He listened to his heart- no rubbing sounds!
    The inflammation is gone ;-)

They took an x-ray. No fluid around his heart!
(We stopped the diuretics last Wednesday.)

    He is RUNNING!
    And he loves to run!
    He didn't love to run...
    BUT
    He loves to run now!

Can I have an "Amen Jesus"!

    He loves to jump!
    He never jumped before...

    He is starting to climb!
    He never climbed before...

Can I have another "Amen Jesus"!

    How can it be...
    that an orphan from China
with a severe, life threatening heart condition,
    that wasn't expected to live...

    Is now thriving!

    It can only be God!

    IT. CAN. ONLY. BE. GOD!

He is 3 yrs old and he is...
Running, laughing, jumping, climbing, teasing his big brothers, saying boo to his Momma and Daddy(always trying to scare them), recognizing numbers 1-5, counting to 10 and more, knowing 6 colors, doing 24 piece puzzles, riding a tricycle, drinking all his milk (he is not a milk fan) and speaking English beautifully!
    (and so much more)

    AND
He has only been home 4 months!

    Praise God!

    PRAISE GOD!

Thank you, to his foster family and his special needs orphanage!
    More than a thank you
has to go to Israel and the Doctors that operated on him!
    More than I thank you
needs to go to the family that advocated for him and made the surgery... happen!

IF YOU EVER DOUBT THE WORTH OF WHAT YOU DO?

    PLEASE DON'T!

    JUST LOOK AT the pictures...

You have truly saved his life!

We go back to the Doctor in 3 months.
Then they will see us in a year
    and the next year
    and the next year
    and...
    well, you get the picture!

He has a normal life expectancy AND a normal activity level...

    OH FATHER
I am on my knees in gratefulness to YOU!

    Landscaping Continues

When I last spoke about the (sad) state of our front yard, this is what it looked like:
It was a jumble of bushes, weeds, flowers. It was a "hot mess" as Niecy Nash would say! The cold, wet weather really prevented me from doing much about it until now. When I started working on cleaning this up the other day, it looked like this:

An even bigger, hotter mess! The only reason why it looks remotely better is because the azaleas have begun to bloom. The bushes were only planted last year so they are still a little on the skimpy side, but we are patiently waiting for them to fill in. When taking a closer look, you can see how big the weeds have grown. Ugh!

Do you see the size of this thing?? This is just one of them!

Then there were the random daffodils to deal with. The ones that were popping up among the bushes were impossible to pull out by the roots because they are underneath the landscaping fabric and somehow managed to grow sideways and up. But there was a big clump of daffodils to the right of the last hydrangea bush and I was determined to get them all the way out once and for all. Imagine my surprise when I realized there were 12 bulbs down there!! Have no fear, I gave them to my mom for her to replant so they won't go to waste. She was more than happy to take them off my hands.

And here we are, weed free. I still need to add a layer of mulch on top, but it is already looking a million times better.

You may have noticed the stakes and mesh fence on the porch. They are for this spot to the right of the porch. So far I spent over an hour just clearing about 2 square feet for the garden. I don't think I knew what I was getting myself into when I promised the kids a veggie garden this year. This is hard work, man! Not to mention that I don't like bugs. Or worms. Ooops. Those creatures tend to hang out in gardens...  The garden itself is not going to take up this entire space, but it all needs to be cleaned up and the bare patches need to be filled with grass.

I'm going to need some help here. Oh, hubby....
