• Create your own lantern: Fill a bamboo or wood birdcage with LED pillar candles of different heights.

These are all so beautiful and easy to implement. Birdcages are not too hard to find at thrift and antique stores and they make such a great statement centerpiece.

• If your kitchen is cramped, remove your upper cabinets and install open shelving. Just as much storage space, but without the bulk.

Ahh, one day... My 80s laminate cabinets are (unfortunately) not going anywhere anytime soon, but in the kitchen of my dreams, there will definitely be open shelving. It's great for opening up the room and adds so much convenience, not to mention a perfect way to display some of your lovelies. If demo isn't in your future, consider just removing the doors of some of your cabinets.

• Make a slipcover for your headboard, even if it's wood. Ever consider shocking pink?

There are so many ways to DIY a headboard and so many ways to make yours unique. From old doors to upholstered headboards, and anything in between. One quick search on pinterest can give so many ideas. The great thing with making a slipcover is that you can change it every season or just whenever it strikes your fancy! Shocking pink may not be your cup of tea, but in a neutral room, it would definitely be a great focal point.

• Paint the ceiling of a white room a pale, pale blue or gray. It will feel as if there's no ceiling at all.

These rooms are all gorgeous for so many reasons, but ultimately it reminds us to not ignore the "fifth wall" of a room because painting it can make a big impact.

• If you have a room with a low ceiling, put up striped wallpaper or curtains — it will feel a foot taller.

This is an optical illusion that really works wonders. As we all know that horizontal stripes on clothes can make us look fatter, vertical stripes in a room, make the ceilings feel higher.

•  Paint the inside of your kitchen cabinets a color that sets off your dishes and glasses. Everything will look cleaner and more finished. 

I love the look of a few glass-fronted cabinets with a contrasting color paint inside. It really sets off whatever is displayed inside and is a great way to add color to a wall of monochromatic cabinets. Using chalkboard paint is a brilliant addition.

• Take your jewelry out of the box. Put all your bracelets together in a big bowl and drape all your necklaces together over a bust. 

Are you like so many of us where out of sight means out of mind for our jewelry? What's the point of having all that gorgeous stuff if we don't wear it? Instead of keeping it all closed up in a box, it's so much more practical (and pretty) to display it out in the open! And don't worry if you don't have a pretty bowl to display your bling in, you can DIY one like the blogger below or search through pinterest for so many other great ways to display your jewelry.

• Change your house numbers.

This one is so easy and pretty cheap. You can get some off the shelf at a big box store, DIY it, or order a custom set from etsy. It can totally change your curb appeal (for the better!) with minimal effort and there are so many creative ways to do this. So do it! :-)

• Invest in a set of matched wooden hangers for your closet. You will feel like the most organized person in the world.

This has got to be the number one way to make any closet look more organized and put-together. The initial investment can get a little high, depending on how much clothing you own, but it's money well spent. Take a look at these super-organized closets and you'll see how the matching hangers makes a huge statement.

• Tack nailheads on a plain, inexpensive ottoman.

Nailhead trim is big right now, and for good reason - it's gorgeous! There are so many ways to do it: headboards, chairs, ottomans, furniture, backsplashes, even a ceiling. I can't wait to incorporate something with nailhead trim into my home, and I'll definitely be sharing it with you when I do!

Simple Ways to Update any Room (Part 4)

• Buy a large map, poster, or print and cut it into equal parts. Frame all the sections and reassemble them on the wall. 

This is a perfect idea for large empty wall spaces. It's an easy way to add some dimension and interest, rather than one plain frame. Doing this with a map is a great way to add an educational element to a playroom and could also go really well in a boy's room - no matter what the age.

• Pull apart a big inexpensive mixed bouquet from the supermarket. Group similar flowers and put them in small vases. You'll have some for every room.

This is an easy way to add some beauty to any room. Small groupings of similar flowers always look great and it's hard to mess up when you cut the stems short. Put the flowers in a short vase, pitcher, jar or anything!

• Instead of buying complete matched sets of towels, buy different shades of one color and mix it up.

Apparently this isn't such a popular idea, as I had a really hard time finding any examples of this tip. I'm actually on the fence about it... Usually, designers would say to put matching towels in bathroom for consistency and uniformity, but there is something to be said for adding a little variety and changing the shade of color towels.

• Gather all your accessories that are the same color from every room in your house. Don't worry how they relate or what you bought to go with what. Now...group all of them together on a tabletop.

Perfect for all the little "tchochkes"and nick-knacks that you have that don't necessarily have a good spot to go. Gathering many different pieces and arranging them as a collection always makes these items look more put together. And even if they have nothing to do with each other, the fact that they are in the some color family in one setting will make the group make sense. Arrange them on a table, mantel, or even a small shelf.

• Buy a big modern shallow bowl, fill it with photos, and put it on your coffee table. An instant conversation starter. 

This is a great way to showcase vintage family photos and a really unique conversation piece. A big bowl of old photos is also a great centerpiece for a family gathering like Thanksgiving.

• Conquer your fear of flower arranging. Anybody can arrange one type of flower in one color, cut short. Buy twice as many as you think you should — too much of a good thing always works with flowers. Put any extra stems in small glasses. 

Just spend a few minutes searching on pinterest for flower arrangements and you'll be overloaded with beautiful arrangements and fillers. Here's just a few:

• Take a white garden bench and paint it the color of your favorite flower.

You can't go wrong with whatever color you choose in this aspect. Mother nature has a way of coming up with the most beautiful, vibrant colors so no matter what your favorite flower is, your bench is sure to come out lovely. And if white happens to be your favorite color flower, then go for it!

• Put a real rug, not a bathroom rug, in front of your bathroom sink. It will hold up just fine.

I never even thought about this, but I think it's a great idea and apparently very popular! I can't say for certain that the rugs in the images below are not "bathroom" rugs, but I can most definitely say that they'd all go well in other rooms of a house.

• Take a wallpaper you've always secretly wanted — but were afraid the pattern was overwhelming. Paper only the wall behind your bed, like a headboard.

This is a great way to get some wallpaper up in a cost-efficient way since you're only putting it on one wall. Then you don't have to feel so bad splurging on a pattern you love!

• Open that coffee table book! Instead of displaying the cover, open it wide to your favorite page and let it really take over your coffee table.

There are some beautiful coffee table books out there with exceptional photography. I know there's a big trend to cut out pages from books and frame them in a grouping (check out part 1 of this series), but there is something to be said for leaving things as-is and keeping a coffee table book as simply a coffee table book. By leaving books open, it encourages us to flip through them so this is a perfect idea for family photobooks as well.
